What Causes Neck Wrinkles?

what causes neck wrinkles

We all know that wrinkles are a normal sign of aging . . . but we don’t have to accept the crow’s feet, laugh lines, and tech neck so soon. (What’s tech neck??? Hold on, we’ll get to it in a sec.)

Of course, we know those fine lines are eventually going to show themselves, but we can slow down and treat the development of wrinkles using a fucking GREAT self-care routine.

Plus, just being aware of how wrinkles form can help you prevent them to stay snached even as you age. (Think of Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Anniston. Wtf do you think their secret is? SKINCARE.)

Okay, so back to tech neck. Since cell phones found their way into our hands, wrinkles have found their way onto our neck. Why? We’re hunched over looking down all. the. time. This is bad news because the neck is usually the first place we age, so speeding up the process while we scroll Instagram SUCKS!!!

Technology isn’t the only reason wrinkles form on the neck area, and today we’re going to explore those other ways wrinkles sneak in, too!

In this post, we’ll also give you the down low on all of our neck wrinkle prevention and treatment tips to keep your skin youthful and glowing!!! Here’s what you need to know:

Causes of neck wrinkles

What Causes Neck Wrinkles?

As we mentioned, the use of technology can cause wrinkles (and even pain). When you always hold your head down, the skin on your neck wrinkles and folds and can cause premature aging. However, you also get neck wrinkles from natural aging as your body loses collagen and elastin.

One more way wrinkles form is through UV light (AKA, light from the sun). This is one of the biggest outside culprits of wrinkles and premature aging there is! Even if you’re not getting a sunburn or tan, the sun will damage your skin if you go out unprotected. Your neck is often exposed when you’re out and about, which may contribute further to wrinkles.

how to prevent neck wrinkles

How To Prevent Neck Wrinkles

Use the right moisturizers and serums.

Keeping your neck moisturized is SO important. Too often when we do our facial skincare routine, we literally just do the face. Guys!!! We need to take this shit all the way to our tits every time.

The right moisturizers, serums, and neck firming creams can stimulate collagen production that naturally firm your skin to reduce the appearance of wrinkles! Other great ingredients include hyaluronic acid, retinol, antioxidants, and vitamin C! (Vitamin C is the best skincare ingredient for all your needs. You can hear more about it in this post and on this episode of Him & Her.)

Always wear sunscreen and a hat!

Listen closely . . . no matter your skin type or color, you NEED sunscreen. Our founder feels so strongly about the benefits of sunscreen for youthful, healthy skin, that she wrote a book and produced a podcast called Get the Fuck Out of the Sun

Now, she didn’t actually mean GTFO of the sun and never go outside. She just means you need sunscreen on every part of your body all the time, not just when headed to the beach. This will help protect your skin from visible signs of aging, but it’ll also help prevent skin cancer. (Yeah, that’s a big one.)

No matter what, wear sunscreen, a hat, BOUGIE DRIVING GLOVES, and sunglasses. Just cover up as much as possible, ladies! To protect your neck, consider a scarf, too!

Drink more water.

Staying hydrated is super helpful for preventing and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. So, get yourself that Stanley you’ve had your eyes on, fill it up with ice cold water, and driiinnnkkkk. This step couldn’t be easier!!

But, if you’re not a water fan, try dressing it up. We have the perfect morning spa water recipe that’ll help make your water drinking experience more luxurious (and, less boring.)

Sleep on your back.

Did you know that most dermatologists and doctors can tell what side of the bed you sleep on because of wrinkles??? Seriously!!! Sleeping on your skin can cause the skin on the neck to wrinkle and those wrinkles can become permanent.

Just think about it! Day after day wrinkling the same part of your neck for hours while you sleep . . .  obviously, it’s going to cause fine lines and wrinkles. To fix this, try sleeping on your back and using a silk or satin pillowcase! A good pillowcase is good for your hair and skin, because it doesn’t absorb your beauty products or the moisture in your hair. Seriously, game changer for us!!!

Exercise your turkey hanger.

Turkey hanger might sound harsh, but you know what we’re talking about . . . that sagging skin under the neck?? Your pesky double chin?? Though you are beautiful EXACTLY as you are, if you want to reduce the wrinkles and strengthen your neck muscles, you gotta work that turkey hanger out!

Great neck exercises include this 5-second face lift and a simple face yoga routine. Just add the workouts into your regular exercise schedule or into your daily skincare protocol. Strengthening those muscles and firming up the skin can totally help minimize those wrinkles!

Use your INSTANT FACE LIFT KIT.

Speaking of face lift, you need the INSTANT FACE LIFT KIT that includes all your must-have products from The Skinny Confidential Shop in a single kit. It’s the perfect set of tools to sculpt and smooth your neck!

Invest in quality tech and tools.

There is soooo much great tech out there nowadays to keep you looking your best. For neck wrinkles, we LOVE the DRx SpectraLite BodyWare Pro by Dr. Dennis Gross. It’s perfectly designed to attack neck wrinkles, and it’s totally painless—it’s even relaxing!! The LED lights stimulate collagen production and woola, no more wrinkles. (Well, maybe still a few.)

Consider dermal fillers or botox.

No shame in this at all. We firmly believe you should be comfortable in your own skin, and you may need some cosmetic procedures to feel yourself. That’s totally fine!! Botox relaxes your face and neck muscles to keep them from constricting and causing wrinkles. On the other hand, dermal filler is an actual gel that plumps up your skin around the muscle.

Our founder, Lauryn Evarts Bosstick has gotten botox before, and you can read about her botox experience here. And, if you want even more info to decide whether cosmetic procedures are right for you, listen to these episodes of the Him & Her podcast

Neck wrinkles from natural aging, tech neck, and poor sleeping positions can be prevented and treated!
