Our faces get a lot of attention when it comes to our hygiene and beauty routine. Creams, lotions, peptides, serums, toners—we all have it down to a science. But our body skincare routine deserves just as much attention, if not more!
Luckily, our bodies aren’t nearly as high-maintenance as our faces. We don’t need a daily ten-step protocol to reach our beauty goals.
However, we do need a once-a-week “everything” shower. It’s when every part of your body gets some much-needed TLC to reset, refresh, and keep your skin and hair looking their best.
But if you’re like many people who use the same quick shower routine they’ve had for years, we’re here to help. (We need way more than shampoo and bar soap, friends.)
In this post, we’re sharing our go-to “everything shower” routine. This regimen will help you upgrade your self-care rituals and give your body the care it actually deserves.

What Is a Shower Routine?
A shower routine is a structured, intentional sequence of hygiene steps for your skin and hair. Instead of taking a shower on autopilot, doing the same basic steps, a shower routine focuses on prioritizing the right products and techniques in the right order. (Because yes, there is a right order here!)
This matters because the order of your steps can affect your skin barrier, hydration levels, and overall results! Having a consistent shower routine helps support healthy skin, strong hair, and better overall hygiene.

What Should Your Shower Routine Be?
Step 1: Dry brush your skin before showering.
Before you get in the shower, use The Skinny Confidential Butter Brush to remove dead skin cells, encourage lymphatic drainage, energize your whole body, and make your skin feel silky smooth. Start at your feet and work your way up!
Here’s how to use an exfoliating brush if you’re new to it! If you don’t have a TSC Butter Brush yet, you can use physical body scrubs during your shower.
Step 2: Adjust your water temperature.
For the best results, aim for lukewarm water. We love our steamy hot showers as much as the next person. However, using hot water can result in over-drying and irritation. Not the goal here!
Step 3: Detangle your hair before shampoo.
While your hair is still (mostly) dry, gently work through any knots with a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush.
Start at the ends and slowly move your way up to the roots to prevent unnecessary breakage. This helps your shampoo distribute more evenly and keeps tangles from getting worse once your hair is wet.
Step 4: Shampoo your scalp properly
Fully saturate your hair with water, then work in a clarifying shampoo. Our favorite is the clarifying shampoo from Kératase (use code SKINNY15 for 15% off your order!). Don’t worry about the ends and mid-lengths, where there’s usually less oil and sweat.
Use your fingertips to gently massage the soap into your scalp. Then rinse thoroughly to prevent buildup or dull-looking hair.
Step 5: Massage the scalp to stimulate circulation.
A scalp massager should definitely be part of your shower essentials. After shampooing, gently work the massager across your scalp to help loosen any remaining buildup and stimulate circulation.
This not only feels amazing, but it can also help distribute natural oils and support a healthier scalp environment.
If you need recs, we love this scalp massager from Pellequr. Use code TSC25 for 25% off.
Step 6: Apply conditioner or hair mask to mid-lengths and ends.
Condition the mid-lengths and ends, avoiding the scalp. Then gently comb the conditioner or hair mask through your hair with your fingers to distribute it evenly and detangle any remaining knots. Let it sit for a few minutes while it hydrates and softens your hair, then rinse it out thoroughly.
Step 7: Cleanse your face.
Bring your face cleanser into the shower with you. Why deal with water running down your elbows onto the counter—and your shirt—if you can avoid it, right?
We recommend a double cleanse: first with an oil-based cleanser, followed by a water-based cleanser. One less thing you’ll need to do as part of your skincare routine.
Step 8: Wash the body strategically.
Use a gentle body wash and a washcloth, loofah, or body brush to work the cleanser across your skin.
Focus on areas where sweat, oil, and bacteria tend to build up—like your underarms, under the breasts, behind the ears, and around skin folds. Then cleanse the rest of your body to remove dirt, sweat, and product residue from your routine.
Step 9: Shave after your hair softens.
At this point in the shower, your hair and skin have softened enough for shaving. Apply a shaving cream or gel. Then use a sharp, clean, non-toxic razor to glide across your skin in short, gentle strokes. Rinse the blade often to prevent hair and product buildup.
Hate shaving around your intimate areas? Here’s how to avoid razor bumps and keep your bikini line silky smooth.
Step 10: Rinse thoroughly.
Before you finish your shower, make sure to completely rinse all shampoo, conditioner, body wash, and shaving products off your skin and hair. Leftover residue can lead to irritation, clogged pores, or buildup on the scalp and body.
Step 11: End with cold water.
Before you get out, turn off the hot water. We know it sounds unpleasant, but there are so many benefits to cold exposure—especially at the end of a shower. It can help reduce inflammation, tighten the appearance of pores, improve circulation, and leave you feeling energized and refreshed.
If you end up loving this cold plunge alternative, let the whole shower get icy. It’s actually really good for your hair to wash in cold water, anyway!
Step 12: Moisturize your skin after showering.
As soon as you get out of the shower, pat your skin mostly dry with a clean towel. While your skin is still slightly damp, apply a nourishing body oil, lotion, or cream to lock in all the moisture from the shower.
Step 13: Apply a scalp serum or treatment.
Apply a lightweight scalp serum or treatment directly to your scalp. This will help support healthy hair growth and prevent any dryness, flaking, or excess oil.
Just part your hair into sections, apply a few drops to your scalp, and gently work the serum in with your fingertips. You can even turn this into another scalp massage for a relaxing, spa-like final touch.
Here’s how to use a scalp massager for the best hair of your life.

How to Have a Good Shower Routine
Hang eucalyptus over the showerhead.
Nothing elevates a shower like fresh eucalyptus. Just hang it over your showerhead and reap all the aromatherapy benefits.
Install a showerhead filter.
If your hair or skin feels dry or looks dull post-shower, it could be the chlorine, heavy metals, sediment, and other minerals in your city’s water. Use a showerhead filter for a really easy way to improve your skin and hair health.
Pat skin dry instead of rubbing.
After a deep body cleanse like this, your skin is probably a little sensitive. Instead of rubbing your skin with a towel, gently pat it dry to avoid irritation before moisturizing.
Upgrade to hotel-quality towels.
Thick, plush towels don’t just feel luxurious—they’re also more absorbent and gentler on your skin. If you want to upgrade your shower routine and combat dry skin, definitely invest in some hotel-quality towels.
Consider getting a towel warmer.
If you end your shower with cold exposure, you’ll definitely appreciate wrapping up in a warm towel when you step out. It helps your body warm back up while you moisturize your skin and apply your scalp treatments.
Use separate towels for your face and body.
We recommend that you have a designated face towel and body towel. Using a separate towel helps prevent transferring bacteria, oils, and body products onto delicate facial skin, which can reduce irritation and breakouts.
Replace towels after a few uses.
You don’t need a fresh towel after every shower, but definitely don’t overdo it. Towels can quickly collect moisture, bacteria, and dead skin cells, so swap them out after about three to four uses to keep things clean and hygienic.
Clean shower tools regularly.
Don’t forget that things like your scalp massager, dry brush, razor, comb, and loofah can all harbor bacteria and product buildup over time. Rinse them well after each use and give them a deeper clean regularly to keep your shower routine hygienic and your skin healthy.
Here’s how to clean a dry brush safely and effectively.
Keep the shower area clean.
Soap scum, mildew, and product residue can build up quickly in the shower. Wipe down surfaces regularly and rinse away leftover hair, soap, and products so your shower stays fresh, hygienic, and inviting.
Ventilate the bathroom after showering.
After you finish showering, turn on the bathroom fan or open a window to let excess moisture escape. Proper ventilation helps prevent mold, mildew, and lingering humidity in the bathroom.
Wash bath mats regularly.
Bath mats absorb water every time you step out of the shower, which means they can quickly collect moisture, bacteria, and odors. Wash them regularly or consider switching to a natural bamboo bath mat.
Replace loofahs or shower sponges every few weeks.
Loofahs and shower sponges stay damp for long periods of time, making them a breeding ground for bacteria. Replace them every three to four weeks to keep your shower routine hygienic.
Use this everything shower routine for cleaner skin, healthier hair, and a more spa-like experience at home.
At the end of the day, your shower shouldn’t just be another task to check off your list. It can be a moment to reset, take care of your body, and enjoy a little everyday luxury.
So light a candle, hang that eucalyptus, and turn your next shower into the self-care ritual you deserve.
