Is Bamboo Toilet Paper Better?

Self-care isn’t just a trend It’s a daily commitment to your health and wellness. It’s about the little habits that help you feel like your best self and the routines that support your body, mind, and mood. Sounds like a lot, right? But it really doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small, intentional changes can have a big impact.

Take toilet paper, for example. Yep, even that matters. Traditional options can be wasteful, full of toxins, and surprisingly rough on both you and the environment. That’s why switching to an alternative like bamboo toilet paper can be such a smart choice. It’s soft, sustainable, non-toxic, and just better all around. Good for your skin, good for the planet, and completely in line with a mindful lifestyle.

Curious? We’ve got all the info you need to make the switch with confidence and feel great about it.

Is Bamboo Toilet Paper Better?

In every way, YES. Bamboo toilet paper is a better option for you, your health, and the earth. Of course, we all want to make choices that are good for the environment, but we want to do that without compromising quality and effectiveness, right? That’s bamboo toilet paper.

Here’s exactly why it’s better:

Bamboo toilet paper is better for you, because it’s softer, thicker, and more absorbent. It’s much gentler on sensitive skin and completely free of harmful chemicals. Bamboo is naturally just as absorbent as traditional toilet paper ingredients, but many brands (like ours at The Skinny Confidential) are 3-ply, meaning a little goes a long way and there should be zero issue with tissue getting left behind.

And, we know what you’re thinking: “But, is bamboo toilet paper septic safe?” Great question, and, yes, it’s totally safe for your septic system. The material is strong but soft, so it breaks down really quickly. If all that wasn’t enough, switching to bamboo toilet paper is also better for the environment!

In this post, we’ll get more into the pros and cons of bamboo toilet paper, but there’s no question. It’s DEFINITELY better.

What Is Bamboo Toilet Paper?

Bamboo toilet paper, as the name suggests, is made from luxurious bamboo fibers instead of traditional wood pulp. It’s made to be softer, healthier, stronger, and better for the environment.

Oh, and don’t confuse bamboo toilet paper with recycled toilet paper, which is eco-friendly, but it’s way less soft and strong. That’s made from “post-consumer recycled content.” AKA recycled paper. (Think old textbooks and office documents, not used toilet paper. Ew.)

Anyway, yes, bamboo and recycled toilet paper are both eco-friendly, but bamboo is the clear winner when you look at both environmental impact and quality. There’s a totally unique toilet paper production process for bamboo tissue that makes it particularly good for your skin and the planet! We’ll talk about that more below.

How Is Bamboo Toilet Paper Made?

Step 1: Harvesting

Bamboo is a fast-growing plant that doesn’t use pesticides, making it one of the most eco-friendly raw materials out there. It’s harvested in sustainable farms with machetes or mechanical harvesters.

The best part? Bamboo doesn’t need to be replanted. As long as the root is there, it just keeps coming back.

Step 2: Chopping

Once the bamboo stalks are harvested, they’re chopped to tiny chips to start breaking it down enough to be processed into paper.

Step 3: Soaking

The bamboo chips are soaked in water (sometimes with added enzymes or mild alkaline solutions) to help loosen the fibers. This will make it way easier to separate the strands to soften them up.

Step 4: Pulping

Now for pulping. This is where rotating stones or refiners grind down and separate the bamboo fibers. Heat and steam is then used to soften and improve the quality of the material. The result is a fibrous slurry that’s perfect for toilet paper!

Step 5: Chlorine-Free Bleaching

If you notice, no chemicals have been used so far, and we’re not starting now. So, hydrogen peroxide or oxygen-based solutions are used to brighten and whiten the bamboo for that signature clean appearance.

Step 6: Drying

Next, the bamboo pulp needs to be dried. It’s spread onto mesh screens or rollers and pressed into thin sheets. Heat is then used to dry out the bamboo into large sections.

Step 7: Rolling

These sheets are then rolled into huge jumbo rolls. (Not like the ones you buy at the store. These are much, much bigger.)

Step 8: Cutting

Finally, the bamboo rolls are cut, trimmed, and perforated into the standard paper roll sizes you’re used to! And, in our case, the toilet paper is embossed with our signature TSC for that luxe feel.

How Soft Is Bamboo Toilet Paper?

Bamboo toilet paper is SO soft. It’s because bamboo fibers are naturally smooth and long, which gives them a silkier texture once made into paper. High-quality bamboo toilet paper like ours is also free of harsh chemicals that would normally make the paper rougher and harsher on your skin. So, yes, bamboo toilet paper is the softest TP out there.

Is Bamboo Toilet Paper Environmentally Friendly?

Bamboo toilet paper is 100% sustainable because it requires no pesticides, no fertilizers, and very little water to make. Plus, bamboo is the fastest growing plant ever (literally up to 3 ft per day), so it doesn’t require a lot of land to farm.

Bamboo toilet paper production also means a lower carbon footprint, since it doesn’t take a lot of equipment to harvest and because bamboo releases way more oxygen than most other trees. You’ll also be happy to know that harvesting bamboo instead of traditional wood pulp helps preserve forests worldwide that are actually threatened by the manufacturing of paper products (like the Boreal Forest.)

So, if you’re looking for THE BEST eco-friendly toilet paper available? You want bamboo toilet paper.

Where Can I Find Bamboo Toilet Paper?

When you’re shopping for bamboo toilet paper, you’ve got to look out for things like greenwashing. Even though it says eco-friendly, that doesn’t always mean that it is. Some bamboo toilet paper is full of bleach, dyes, fragrances, and other harsh chemicals. Plus, if it’s not thoughtfully produced, it’s rougher and thinner than regular toilet paper despite the better quality materials.
